The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are an autonomous public technical and research university located in India and are among the most reputable Institute of technology in the world. They are government by the Institute of Technology act 1961, which has declared them as Institutions of national  importance and lays down their powers duties and framework for governance. The institutes of technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three Institute. Each IIT is autonomous linked to the other through a common council (IIT Council ) which oversees their administration . The Minister of Human Resource Development is the Office Chairperson of the IIT council. As of 2018, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 11,279. The only major requirement to admit to these Institution is to pass the JEE advanced.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is a public technical and research university located in Hauz khas, Delhi is one of the 7 oldest IITs in India. Indian Institute of Technology Madras is a public technical and research university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. As one of the Indian Institute of Technology , it is recoginised as an Institute of National Importance. Founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the former government of West Germany it was the third IIT that was established by the Government of India. IIT Madras is a residential Institute that occupies a 2.5 km square (617) acre campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. The Institute has nearly 600 faculty, 10,000 students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff.

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is a public Technical and research university established by the government of India. in 1951. It is the first of the IITs to be established and is recoginised as an Institute of National Importance. In 2019 it was awarded the status of Institute of Eminence by the government of India..
